Community Map
People
are involved in many different discourse communities, whether it is their
hobbies or the lifestyle they were born in, the discourse communities that a
person is involved in categorizes him or her into a specific group of people,
making them who they are. A discourse community can determine an individual’s
personality and life styles, because of my discourse communities that I
participate in my personality and lifestyle changed to fit the discourse
communities. Fishing, gardening, athletics, and piloting are all part of my
life and are some of the discourse communities that make up who I am.
People
have been fishing for centuries, before the Common Era, people fished for the
soul reason of survival. As fishing grew popular and centuries past fishing was
no longer for simple survival, not just for commercial fishing and human
nourishment for the fishes meat, but for the sport. Fishing grew to be an
American pastime that united fathers and sons all across the country and even
world. This sport came into my life since I was three and changed my life
forever. I fell in love so much with the sport that it completely took over my
life; I now go fishing almost every weekend. The sport also gave me a new love
for the animals, fish are beautiful animals, their exotic beauty drives my
attention and mind to love them and fascinate over them. So much so that I now
own four very large aquariums and take better care of them than my girlfriend. Fishing
has taught me patients, discipline, and respect for a different species and
nature. Fishing and aquariums are truly an amazing aspect of my life and an
incredible Discourse Community to be a part of.
Gardening
and agriculture has been part of people’s life and essential for human survival
and prosperity for years. Thousands of people still love to do this in their
backyard not necessarily for survival anymore but for the fun and beauty of it.
The reason I became part of this Discourse Community is because homegrown
organic fruit tastes exquisitely delightful. Gardening can be profitable in the
long run; it is so much cheaper than buying fruits and vegetables at the store,
the produce also tastes much better. This Discourse Community is not only
calming and a great way to bond with the family, it’s also great for
appreciating the beauty nature has to offer, to allow nature to enlighten the
heart, soul and mind.
Athletics
has been bringing the world together since the beginning of time, the
competitive side of humans has been a huge factor on the popularity of sports,
everyone driving to be the best and give a legendary performance. In my case this
is a discourse community I am very familiar with. More specifically than just
athletics, I’m in the discourse community of track and field. Pole vault has
brought only the most elite and unique world athletes together. Pole Vault is
very specialized and difficult sport that I am honored to be a part of and has
changed my personality drastically. Pole Vault has made me a more disciplined
and dedicated individual, forced to live a healthy lifestyle, which I wouldn’t
change for the world. There are thousands of people involved in this sport but
only a lucky and privileged few are good at it, thankfully I was blessed with
the qualities a pole vaulter needs to become excellent at the sport and feel
very privilege to be part of this discourse community.
Airplanes
have become one of the most popular ways to travel and mailing vehicles to have
ever existed, however today airplanes are used for much more than that, things
such as war and even fun are now related to these impressive machines.
Commercial Airline pilots, war veterans, currently enlisted man and woman to
the military, and plane enthusiasts are all part of this discourse community.
The reason I am in it is because my step grandfather is an army veteran jet
pilot, he thought me everything I know about planes and has been a mentor in
this particular Discourse Community, through him I’ve obtained my pilots
license and am a certified pilot in the United States. This very elite
Discourse community allows for meeting tons of new people, other pilots eager
to meet new and young pilots to share their very unique stories and exotic
landing sites, this allows to visit places never before imaginable and a very
unique way to travel.
These
four very unique Discourse Communities are what make up who I am. Many people
share the same interests that I do, but no one in the world has had the same
experience I’ve had that’s what makes these Discourse Communities make me so
unique, a true individual. These aspects of my life are what make up who I am
and I would never change any of them for the world. I love being part of these
discourse communities and would recommend anybody who is interested to join
them, for if they do, they might help that individual not just become as unique
as myself, but hopefully as happy as me, and live a fun rich beautiful life as
I do.
